This image depicts the space taken up by cell nuclei, which contain the DNA of blood vessels in the developing zebrafish trunk. To produce this image, data were acquired using a state-of-the-art microscope and the individual cell nuclei extracted using a bespoke segmentation workflow. The 3D spaces were extracted using a technique called Voronoi diagram. Lastly, data were colour-coded for depth. Important to note is that the cell nuclei under investigation are about 10 micrometre in diameter, which is 1/100 of a millimetre. The darker regions are closer to the viewer, while the lighter grey areas are further away.

Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. Signal was acquired in a stable transgenic line. Image pre-processing, segmentation, Voronoi analysis, and depth-coding were done using Fiji.

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.
