Starry Night

This image shows the developing brain vasculature in a one-day old zebrafish viewed from the front perspective. This is a period of rapid development and rearrangement, and the very fine structures pointing away from the vessels like fingers indicates that the blood vessels are seeking a path to migrate. The dots underneath the vessels are red blood cells that will later be pumped through the blood vessels.

Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. Signal from stable transgenic line was acquired, and a maximum intensity projection was produced using Fiji.
