This ink and watercolour portrait is by the artist Dr Elisabeth Kugler. This piece aims to showcase the beauty and cultural significance of different tradition. Taking a portrait photograph by Frank Holleman as inspiration, this portrait explores Hindu Tilak marks.

Tilak is a Hindu ritual involving the application of a religious symbol or paste on the forehead, and it holds immense spiritual significance. While creating this portrait using a mixed media approach, golden ink and Indian ink was used to elevate the importance and sanctity of these marks. The golden ink is in contrast to the simple clothing, where patterning is only indicated.

Based on this work, the artist is now exploring the importance of fabric and the weaving of stories into fabric. Book recommendation: "Fabric: The Hidden History of the Materialby Victoria Finlay.
