This image shows the developing brain vasculature viewed from the side in a two-day old zebrafish. Using a stable transgenic line that visualizes the membrane of the blood vessel cells, intricate  details can be observed, such as vessels seeking their own growth path, which can be viewed in the bottom right corner. As this is a time of development, the blood vessels and tissues of the body change rapidly. This can be seen in the blood vessel of the left eye which is just beginning to form a loop (middle height of picture). Studying these data, we can start to understand how blood vessels are formed and maintained.

Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. Signal was from stable transgenic lines was false-coloured and a maximum intensity projection was produced using Fiji.

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.
